THE ROLE OF HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY IN NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, the hospitality industry has become one of the world’s fastest growing industries. The hospitality industry plays a crucial role in fostering national development through contributions to economic growth, employment creation, infrastructural development, cultural exchange, rural and regional development, multiplier effects on other sectors, foreign investment, boosting entrepreneurship and small businesses and human capital development. However, the sector also face significant challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, political instability, poor infrastructure, environmental and health crisis, technological challenges, economic instability, seasonality of demand, lack of skilled labour, and poor government support. This paper explores the multidimensional role of the hospitality industry on national development and examines the major challenges limiting its full potential. The paper highlights strategies for enhancing the industry’s role in national development. Useful recommendations are made aimed at achieving a lasting and sustainable development of the hospitality industry.References
