PARENTAL ATTRIBUTES AND INTERPERSONAL WELLBEING OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN UYO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

Abstract

Interpersonal well-being in adolescence is not formed in isolation but shaped by the financial, emotional, and behavioural patterns within the family. This study examined how three parental attributes - socio-economic status (SES), parenting style, and mental health influence the interpersonal well-being of senior secondary school students. Three research questions and corresponding hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted a Causal Comparative (Ex-post factor) research design. A sample size of 360 was derived from the population of 3565 SSII students using the Taro Yamane Formula. A simple random sampling technique was utilized. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “Parental Attribute and Students’ Interpersonal Wellbeing Questionnaire (PASIWQ)”. The instrument had an internal consistency reliability of 0.77. Data analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. Result showed that there was a significant influence of parental socio-economic status on students’ interpersonal wellbeing (F-ratio(2, 357) = 424.740, p < 0.05), there was a significant influence of parenting style on students’ interpersonal wellbeing (F-ratio(3, 356) = 103.516, p < 0.05), and there is a significant influence of parental mental health on students’ interpersonal wellbeing (F-ratio(2, 357) = 229.961, p < 0.05). It was recommended among others that stakeholders in education and health should prioritize parental mental health by providing accessible counselling, stress management services, and awareness campaigns to help parents maintain psychological balance that benefits students’ interpersonal development.
